I discovered yesterday that it is not terribly easy to capture a large space in a photograph. I guess I am so used to doing still life close up shots, that it hadn't occurred to me. Anyway, it took me the better part of an hour to get these mediocre shots of my bedroom to share with you. With that being said, I hope you can get the feeling of what my new bedroom is like. (Here is a shot of what you see as you enter my bedroom...)
The room continues to be a work in progress, as it has a high ledge around two walls of the room that I am currently debating whether to leave empty or add a few vintage touches up above. If you look, you can just barely see the start of the ledges in a couple of my photos. (What are your thoughts on these kinds of ledges? Fill 'em, or leave 'em?)
The room is spacious and I wanted to keep that feeling, so I haven't added a lot of accessories. (The photos make the room look much smaller than it is, so just take my word for it.) I'm going with my neutral palate of cream, white, mocha and a touch of deep dark brown antiqued brass in my bed frame. Another fun thing about doing my bedroom this time, was that I re-purposed a lot of things I already had. (I guess I do that all the time, now that I think on it...) I moved things that had previously been in other rooms of my home, or were in my thrifted pile for my booth space. The trunk for example had been in my guest room on Norman Drive, and the white cutwork duvet had been in and out of my antique booth more times than I could count. It never sold, and now I know why. It was meant for me.
I love the my bed, filled with feather pillows, a feather bed and a down comforter....it's like sliding into a huge puffy cloud to sleep each night.(the photo below makes the bed look like it is right on top of the fireplace. In actuality, it is much further away, as pictured in the top photo....it's that camera thing.)
There is a nice sized sliding door with a transom window above it, and a sweet balcony (small deck? Whatever you prefer to call it.) with a nice view...I think I'll put a wicker rocker out there this summer for my morning cuppa cocoa with Moose.
I hope these photos helped to give you an idea of the look of my room so far. It's also the only room in the house that is completely unpacked and organized, (even the closet!) and that makes me like it even more.
**edited to add** Since you're asking.....
My bedding- The sheets are from JCPenney online catalog- I got them on sale with free shipping. The duvet, as I said, was a thrifted find my daughter found a long time ago for my booth, the mocha quilt- my other daughter gave it to me when she didn't have a place for it any longer...it is from someplace...I think it was Target. Oh, one more thing: JCPenney online has feather pillows and such for great prices.

Lovely.So cozy...

Looks beautiful, Tracy!! And the view is lovely as well! I think I might tend to leave the areas blank for a while until I was "moved" to put something up there.....I am going toward LESS stuff in my maturing! Your room looks very serene and peaceful!

I love it! I only use cream or white sheets too. Do you had to remember who made your bedding? I need to replace my poor worn out ruffled top sheets and I don't know where I can find new ones.

I meant to say Happen to remember!

Love it! So comfy. Go for it -- fill the ledges! Surround yourself with all the pretty things you have!

It is just beautiful! I have a hard time believeing that of there is display space you won't use it:>) Maybe just a few pretty vignettes on that ledge?
Posted by: Kathleen Grace | January 09, 2010 at 07:59 AM
Very serene looking! I'd try somethings on the ledge and see if you like it. Love the little fire place with Mooses bed. Maybe you need a comfy chair there, too. Just to increase the cozy factor. I really like the trunk and suitcase for you bedside table.

Looks really nice Tracey. I have a featherbed too and love it! I use it year round and especially in the winter, it makes my bed feel so opulent! Besides, I sleep really well on it.
Can't wait to see the rest of the place....Tami E.

Looks beautiful! How wonderful to have a fireplace in your bedroom and a deck outside! Your lamps are lovely. Though it takes time, I'm sure you are enjoying getting to decorate your new place and you are doing a terrific job so far!

I love your bed. Is it really old? Or a reproduction? Looks perfect in your room!
Posted by: bell | January 09, 2010 at 08:30 AM
lovely..where did you get your bedding? i had ledges in one of my master suites and i think maybe one or two huge trucks but thats it..it is hard to get up there and can look cluttery really fast..i left mine empty for the longest time and liked it that way..i love your retreat...would love to know where you got your bedding..thanks

Simpy lovely Tracey! Perfect capture of a serene bedroom, especially with the view:) I would leave the ledge free of anything. The bedding is scrumptious!

I love the aura of this new room. I would personally "miss" some little doo-dads after a time, but I have always wanted to have little boxes of such doo-dads that corresponded to seasons, holidays, or moods and use them sparsely in a room such as this.. a la kitchen of Sandra Lee.... However, my doo-dads runneth over~~~ and I didn't move, so... no serene bedroom for me... I love the palette...

Beautiful! I love the bed and ADORE the lamp on the nightstand!

If the bedroom is pretty and peaceful, all is right with the world(or new home).
Lovely room, especially the bed. Sweet dreams!

Lovely! Every bedroom oughta be a serene retreat. I agree with the other commenter -- how about a comfy chair next to the fireplace?
Do tell -- what's the quote by your bedside?

Great job as always! Your room turned out beautiful and I love your fireplace! I think that you should definitely put one of your vinettes on the ledge and also agree that a chair would be great by your fireplace. We have feather beds and pillows and I love them. Can't wait to see more!

I love all the nooks you have I say FILL 'EM... Love the color scheme, and Moose's lil spot!

Just to confirm - the mocha piece on the bed IS from Target. It is a Thomas O'Brien piece.

What a great start on your new bedroom. I've been curious about the new bed ever since you showed us your stocking hanging from it at Christmas. Where did you get your bed? I think a cozy chair for you to sit by the fire and enjoy your stacks of magazines would be great. I would hang a few things on the walls before worrying about the ledge. Are you going to put painter cloth curtains on your slider? When do we get to see the kitchen?
Posted by: Margie | January 09, 2010 at 02:15 PM
Very pretty - has a fresh look! I need to "spiffy" mine up, but don't know where to start - probably painting the walls or move like you did. :-)

See if you are so moved to add a vignette or two....or three....or more!
You just have to be careful about making it look too heavy up there for the room, if you know what I mean. Top heavy I guess.
You are so gifted at decorating, what are you asking us for???
Posted by: Betsy Derr | January 09, 2010 at 03:33 PM
I don't know how I feel about the ledges either. I have 3 in our bedroom and 2 in our bathroom. We just moved from Florida to northern Kentucky and our home is a lot bigger and it is taking me some time to get a feel for it.

Tracey - DROOLING over your soft and sweet bedroom. I'm so happy for you. Your bed looks fabulous! Everything so serene like you said. Your view is amazing. The fireplace makes it even more cozy. I don't think I'd ever want to leave my bed and when I did, I would think about getting back to my sanctuary as soon as I could. Enjoy - you deserve it! :)

Lovely, lovey! I would fill those ledges up if it were me..but I have too much stuff! I'm a fan of filling up spaces, but the clean, uncluttered look is appealing as well. I always say I'm going to leave things uncluttered, but it never lasts. Love the fireplace!!

Definitely a "de-stress the day away Haven" Tracey just made for "Sweet Dreams"! Your room is the 'get away' many leave home to find Tracey--relaxing, calm, open and..... holy cow you even have a fireplace AND a deck!?!?!?!....ahem....excuse me I think I just stirred up that serenity/tranquility didn't I? :o) As always Tracey--beautiful touch.
God Bless,
Barbra.

You can never have too many feathers in your retreat-place.
Our ledge holds a string of white mini-lights that shed the most peaceful glow.

A charming room.
Wondering if you could get some kind of lighting up on the ledge? Something soft and glowing? Just a thought.

I don't know if this will help those in search of a duvet similar to yours. I have one in ivory with a tiny ruffle around three sides. It's from Pine Cone Hill, I have their dust ruffle too in the same style.
I already order my JC Penny sheets!!! The nesting will be complete.
Best,
Kathy

You will find the right thing for the ledge, I know you want to...lol,,,how about an angel or 2 or 3 or 4 to watch over you as you sleep...have fun!

Beautiful....*sigh* Like a slice of heaven.
Posted by: cindy | January 10, 2010 at 07:05 AM
Leave the ledges clean....but put some big art work on the walls....nothing small. That will give it the "wow" factor! And that chair by the fireplace or chaise lounge would make it decadent.

I always say I love sleeping on a cloud. So happy to find someone else who says that. Your room looks like heaven. I can imagine snuggling down and reading something really good with the soft light, the soft cloud of bedding, the firelight and feeling so happy...

With that fluffy bed & fireplace (a fireplace in your bedroom!! Heaven!!), I might never leave!
Posted by: Kim | January 10, 2010 at 11:35 AM
I think you have a lovely bedroom. Fluffy bed, fireplace and balcony are perfect !! I have those ledges in my bedroom (and in my master bath). I love the architecture, but it is hard to keep something clean up there ! Fake plants really show the dust, and life is just too short to get a ladder out and clean them often. I'd rather be reading by that cute fireplace than dusting fake plants, wouldn't you ?
Posted by: Deborah | January 10, 2010 at 03:01 PM
Tracey,
I totally agree that you would enjoy a nice wing back chair by the fireplace ;-} Placed where you can both enjoy the fire as well as the view out the slider.
A chair with a small table beside it on your cute porch come warmer weather, will be oh so enjoyable for you.
While I am against the suggestions to "fill" your top moldings, I do not think they should stay empty either. You know how pictures of certain adorable cute babies are always somehow sneaking their way into your blog postings .... I think you would enjoy waking up to their smiling faces placed here and there up on those ledges ...

I love the neutral colors, they are very restful. The wall color works perfect with your color scheme. You don't happen to know the paint color, do you?

Beautiful room and that fireplace is such a bonus. Is that a large mirror you have propped against the wall? I've been looking for a large mirror to use in my bedroom but nothing so far that I can afford.
The ledges....I think a couple of large pieces would be great.
Posted by: Yankee Doodle | January 10, 2010 at 05:55 PM
Very cozy. When we bought our new home, I became a minimal-ist. I wanted no clutter what so ever. I too wanted as few things around as possible. I think this comes from having a booth that can be filled with wonderful vignettes but at home I prefer cleaner lines. We bought all new furniture but kept a few antiques.
I'm enjoying seeing your your new home. Moving is a great opportunity to implement new ideas. Enjoy, this is the fun part.

Very pretty room. I like the soft colors and the lack of clutter. Nice view, also. I don't think I would like to see myself in that mirror each morning . . . might scare myself!

Your bedroom looks very appealing. I love it with its rather spare look. I would enjoy the ledges as they are---empty.

Oh what fun, decorating a new home! My current home has high ceilings and several ledges in different rooms. When I first moved in I thought they would be the perfect spot for some of my fun and funky collections. First I tried my "tins" collection. Everything was too small to be appreciated at such a distance. I ended up putting a lamp up on one of the ledges and using some rather large pieces for impact. I used a kids tricycle, an old red wagon, a huge teddy bear sitting on a vintage child's chair, and even some vintage children's toys. They had enough visual weight to counter the height and depth of my ledges.
I was very intrigued by a friend's ledge in her living room. She used a HUGE sign that looked like it may have been on the side of a barn at one point. It was very fun with a big steer's head and part of a ranch name.
Most people living around me called them Plant Ledges. I don't know how anyone would get up there and water plants on a regular basis if they weren't part monkey. That's why I got creative.
I also have to say that dusting is not something fun to do up there either, so I didn't choose anything that you could tell whether I had or hadn't dusted. Tricky!!

Your bedroom is sooo wonderful! I don't like putting too much accessories in our bedrooms, too. Two of our hand forged iron beds were redesigned by my hubby and it's bigger than our old one. I love your fireplace and the sliding door. I'm envious. Hehe!
