Personally, I'm far more into the harvest look than Halloween for my own home, other than a few sparse touches here and there (a black crow, a "beware" sign...) Fall decorations can stay up so much longer.
This year however, I am doing up a few little Halloween things for my booth at Junkees, along with a lot of harvest decor items.I'm not sure which will sell best, but I'll find out soon enough. I'll be hauling it all down there by the end of the week.
The little chair shown in the photo above was one of my finds this past Saturday while out junkin'. I added a little "boo" banner that can be removed after Halloween, and the sweet lil' pumpkin can stay. (How perfect is that for fall?)
I got my latest Martha Stewart Living magazine (you know Martha is a nut for Halloween and does up some of the coolest and cutest things to decorate for the occasion!) and now I'm wondering how many of you go all out decorating for Halloween, as opposed to just a harvest theme?

I much prefer Harvest Decor, but I do have a few Halloweenie things here and there.

I have a few favorite Halloween things that I put out - nothing scary. Most of my decor is Harvest. After Halloween, I add turkeys for Thanksgiving.

I pretty much stick with fall/harvest decor. About the only thing "halloween" is when the kids carve a jack-o-lantern. I like your little black chair. Very cute.
I used mini pumpkins and leaves to dress up my antique booth. The pumpkins seem to turn ordinary objects into something that catches people's eye.

I'm with you - mostly harvest with a few Boo's and Trick or Treats thrown in. Purely for practical reasons, the harvest goes right through Thanksgiving. I just replace the Halloween stuff with turkeys.

I look forward to Fall all year long, so that's what I mostly decorate for but I do love some fun stuff for Halloween. Since my birthday is the day after Halloween, it was always a fun time...so yeah, a black crow, a witches hat, some cooky, haunty kinda decor....ESPECIALLY orange lights! Love those!

Harvest for me! This year I'm adding a bit. I do a 'step-by-step' kind of fall decorating. I'm doing fall things like leaves, berries, etc. right now. Around the first of October I'll add pumpkins and harvest decor and on November 1st I'll switch some of that for pilgrims and turkeys. I get tired of everything if I put it all out now. When I was teaching piano lessons I waited until October 1st to decorate with pumpkins and harvest, adding pilgrims and turkeys on November 1st. I got so tired of it all by Thanksgiving so this year I decided to do a bit at a time. Sneak up on it! Maybe I won't try this again but so far I'm liking it. ~Adrienne~

Sorry to always ask how you did something, but what did you do to the chair? How did you get the black look with the "brown" coming through? Did you use a glaze?
Looks AWESOME! So cute. And I don't decorate much for the seasons. gasp, I know!

Oh, looks like the blog needs a vote for Halloween. I love Halloween. Witches, goblins, ghosts, the whole bit. It's better than Christmas.

I'm into Harvest/fall decor, too. Since my home is more than a little discombobulated, my fall decor is spread out everywhere. I will work this week to get everything back in order! Love fall colors, and pumpkins, and harvest kinds of things!

I have twin 8 yr olds so we decorate for Halloween (cutsie, NOT scary!) and then after 10/31 we put away the ghosts, cats and bats and turn the jack-o-lanterns around and bring out the faux autumn leaved tree and decorate for Fall. I have always decorated for both and the kids are the ones that make sure we aren't late getting it done. I do not decorate the outside of the house for Halloween (yard decor) other than the wreath until the actual day. We are in a high traffic area, so decorations tend to walk (or drive) off. But when you walk into our home on Oct 1, it is obvious we enjoy celebrating Halloween!

Oh it is always harvest for me... I don't mind a carved pumpkin ..they have just wonderful faux one's now... who can resist... but I definately like pretty.....Living in the country the harvest time is always the best.....

I don't do inside decorations for fall or halloween. For outside, it's strictly fall, which I haven't done yet as we are still HOT and my pretty pink and blue flowers are still flourishing! LOL In the next couple of weeks, I will pull those up, add cornstalks, pumpkins, bittersweet, pansies, etc. I've been looking for something to do with my window boxes, they are the haystack style.
The day before Halloween I usually add a halloween flag, some luminaries, jack-0-lantern for the kiddies, as we do get several trick-or-treaters.

I like halloween and fall.. you'll have to stop by and join my pretty up your pumpkin party on the 8th.

I'm more into the fall decor too. I do add a couple of things that add a bit of the halloween mood. I have a beat up OLD broom and neat witch hat that I set on the chair by the front door. The front door is always framed with corn stalks and bittersweet. I love goards and pumkins. Once Nov. hits I add my turkey collection (vintage turkeys) and brown transfer ware. I think I prefer fall decor to Christmas. For all the holidays I tend to go with things connected to nature.
Happy Monday,
Kathy

Harvest, all the way! I use sunflowers in August. I add apples to them for September. I add pumpkins and fall leaves for October. Turkeys are added in November. I LOVE fall!
Posted by: September Lady | September 22, 2008 at 06:07 AM
I do both! Because we have an annual costume party at our house we decorate for Halloween and then I readjust for Thanksgiving! The holidays are just coming up on us too quickly!

Very cute!
Posted by: Mecky | September 22, 2008 at 06:38 AM
I really don't care for halloween, so I stick with harvest decor. I particularly like pumpkins and pansies together for outside, and inside I like to switch out the light colors of summer to the deeper colors of fall in pillows and throws and such.
Posted by: Jill | September 22, 2008 at 06:48 AM
We are a harvest household. Pumpkins, a wreath in fall colors, & mumms are the extent of our decor. Last year we had white pumpkins on the porch and I kept forgetting to get rid of them until it finally became the family joke. The goal was to decorate the pumpkins to fit the next holiday so we had Christmas pumpkins & Valentines pumpkins and then I got rid of them.

Harvest for me. I don't go 'hog wild' in decorating for any season - just touches here and there. I love autumn though so put out soft yellow and white afgans and comfy covers, my private stash of real gourds (all natural colors of soft creamy yellows), books, clay pots and bowls, and a few harvesty style sprays here and there.
Posted by: Jane | September 22, 2008 at 07:34 AM
It's a harvest house here. Seems like the world is already too full of the twisted and creepy.

I decorate with all black and white halloween decore all of my mercury glass and lots of clear and mercury glass candle holders the only orange are the great punkins. we have our adult children grandchildren bring punkins the night before halloween i serve pazoli soup, sandwiches, and spiced doughnuts its so much fun this year my punkin will be the mouse hotel from marthas magizine. as our children move out of the nest and start having there own children it is such a new chapter and having traditions like this is so fun our oldest grandson at six already knows we always carve punkins at grandpas and grandmas It really works well for us as my husband and I have only been married for 8 years, I was widowed in 1992 and he was divorced. when we got married he had two adult girls with out children already out of the nest and i a 14 year old son this was a way for our family could blend. we dyed easter eggs decorate the tree togeter i am big on tradition and the kids all love it . then at thanksgiving i decorate for the harvest lots of white and blue punkins

I like them both...I have been doing quite a few Halloween crafts as of late. I agree the Harvest look goes farther. I love vintagey Halloween...blacks, creams, etc..goes better with my home. Great minds think alike...I did the same thing...added a pumpkin to a litte chair...I put a little skeleton key hangin from the back of it. I posted it last week. cherry

That chair is so cute. I love a rush seat. I decoate Fallish in September, then in October I bring out the Halloweenish stuff..yes Martha is a nut for Halloween! She has the best ideas. We do a Halloween party every year so we have to decorate when it is at my house. Nothing to scary though. I'll post what I did so far on my blog. I finally decorated for fall last week.

Oh my gosh, when my girls were younger we went all out for Halloween (I'm even using a photo from back then as my blog banner right now), but I've become more of a minimalist regarding Halloween for a few reasons: 1) My girls are late teens/20's now, so they're not into it like when they were younger; 2) I've switched from a prim decor to a light robin's egg/pink cottage decor so the typical Halloween colors (orange/black) don't look quite as good with my new colors 3) most importantly, I'm TRYING to become more of a minimalist. I still decorate the yard outside, but inside I'm just putting out some beautifully shabby fabric pumpkins for the season..
Christmas is my downfall... I just can't seem to become a minimalist with my Christmas decorations!
Your home/booth/decor is always so beautiful and such an inspiration!

Like so many who commented, I do a bit of both. The decorations are mostly Fall but I like to make cards, ATC's, etc with a Halloween theme.
The little chair is perfect!

My decor is almost completely autumn-themed, with only a couple of prim-type carved jack-o-lanterns. I *did* Halloween when the boys were little, but it's just not a favorite holiday of mine. Autumn, however, is my favorite season!

Halloween with alot of pumkins and mums and a corn stalk and a bundle of hay and then i make a scarecrow man to sit on the hay.....so i would say both...it starts out more halloween then goes to fallish...but the weather in the midwest really is feeling like fall...i live in northern Indiana and just love this time of year....some of the trees are just starting to turn.....then comes the snow...lol...

Hey there! I'm not a fan of Halloween, to be honest. However, I do collect small chairs...so this idea really appeals to me. Love the little banner...just because it's so tiny. Looks great! Pat

I have just developed a passion for fall and halloween decorations. It's still very hot here in Southeastern LA, so there are no cool breezes except those found in an air conditioned building. Still, I do put a few touches of autumn AND Halloween around the house, but sparingly.

Personally, I've never decorated for Halloween. Only Harvest. I like to celebrate "God's Harvest" and then add some turkeys to the same decor for Thanksgiving.
I mean, I give out candy and all, don't get me wrong, but I just don't see all the fun of blood, gore, witches, dead, skulls, etc.
Blessings,
Sher

I put out fall decor in September, add touches of Halloween in October, remove these in November and replace with my Thanksgiving touches. And THEN....... Christmas goes up the day after Thanksgiving!!!!!!!!

We don't celebrate Halloween at all because of our faith based values - but we adore fall! We have so many special family occasions that fall in the coolness of autumn, and our daughter's middle names are Autumn Joy! Because of my chronic illness, we are celebrating fall quietly this year, but we are remembering the goodness of God in a special way each day!

Ohhhh, I am a Halloween NUT! My husband has forbidden me to bring anything else home!! What he doesn't know wont' hurt him! hehehe
I really don't do anything scary, four year old son to think of, but just the cheesy spooky stuff that makes everyone laugh. Then I go into the harvest stuff, then come December 1st look out! Christmas EVERYWHERE and I am not as bad as my mother-in-love who takes down pictures and curtains to put up the really bad Christmas stuff...Oh well to each their own!
I love the chair and it has made me want to go craft!!

I'm more into the Harvest look myself...I do add a few ghoulish elements as it gets closer to Halloween but i love the Harvest look the best of all.
Posted by: Gayle D | September 22, 2008 at 07:19 PM
I do both. I put quite a bit of fun Halloween figurines out with the Harvest theme. Then, after Halloween I put away the decorations and put out a few Thanksgiving things to go with the Harvest.

I tend to lean toward fall/harvest decorations in September, then add a few Halloween items, but nothing scary. I love this time of year because it's the beginning of all the celebrations for the next few months.

You are so right. I like to do the harvest theme. It lasts alot longer. When I still had my kids at home lots of Halloween decor was a must. Now just a few things here and there is plenty. Mimi

I tend to be very harvest oriented myself, though hubby loves halloween. :) I like that we can combine both looks (and then weed out the halloween stuff at about 10pm on Oct. 31 LOL!!)

I definately add a few of my own fall touches around the house. It just feels festive!

I just discovered your blog a few weeks ago and I just love it! I find myself looking at furniture in desperate need of attention and thinking what it would look like when you were through with it. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us with your wonderful ideas.

I'm a harvest girl, and I go full-tilt in mid September. I even put out my cornucopias early, so I can enjoy all the autumn goodness all season!

Most holidays I'm too preoccupied with kids and do very little decorating but Fall/Halloween, I go all out. This year I'm going to go nuts! I decorate so that most things are inspired by autumn and then I add Halloween items that can easily be removed. I love to decorate for Halloween because it's the one holiday that is all about fun for kids and candy for parents :o)
Posted by: YardSaleMama | September 23, 2008 at 11:23 AM
I like them both, Halloween & Harvest. I don't decorate as much for Halloween now that the kids are getting older. I guess Fall is taking over the Month of October vs. Halloween. When I do decorate for Halloween is the cute stuff... I'm not into the scary, ugly stuff. I love, love, love your little wagon. You have such a way of transforming everything you get your hands on! xoxo, Joanna
