Have you read this book? Autobiographies, or biographies for that matter, can be so inspiring, and this book is at the top. I read The Glass Castle just about a year ago. Wow. Talk about inspiring.
The maid-of-Honor (hmm, what should I be calling her now that the wedding is past?) and I were discussing the book and it's writer last night, and we decided that she is truly one of the most inspiring people of our time.
You see, Jeannette Walls was raised by two completely mentally unstable parents,(an alcoholic father and a totally delusional mother) along with her two sisters and brother. They lived like gypsies, were homeless much of the time, and yet, found strength within herself, and, banding together with her siblings, was able to to rise above it all, becoming a well known MSNBC gossip columnist. (She recently left MSNBC in July to pursue writing another book...)
Terribly sad in parts, but fascinating and incredible all the way through, this book is a perfect example of beating the odds. True inspiration.
When I'm having a particularly hard day, when I am wondering how I am going to get through, I think of people, like Jeannette Walls, and I am filled with hope. I. am. inspired.

I read this book last year and still think of it often; it's rather haunting. I had a chance to see Jeanette when she spoke at one the local universities, but had a major time conflict. It's hard to imagine growing up like that; it makes me feel fortunate for what I have and the "semi-sanity" circumstances in which I've managed to raise my now-20 year old daughter since her dad stepped out of the picture 6 years ago.
On a more pleasant note, I've enjoyed the progress reports on your daughter's wedding. It looked so special and beautiful.

I'm making a note to purchase this book and read it. It's good to be reminded again and again just how blessed we are and have been. Thank you and blessings.

How funny-I'm reading that book right now. My daughter gave it to me to read the other day when I was in a "I'm a horrible mother" mood and said "Here's something that will show you how NOT horrible you are".
I love your blog :)

Thank you for reminding me of this book. I was just amazed at how Jeannette and her siblings managed to flourish, considering their upbringing. I really can't comprehend growing up like she did. Makes me feel so lucky.
I love reading your blog. Thanks so much for the inspiration!!
